Axial CT (a), PET (b), and PET-CT fusion (c) images clearly demonstrate a midline focus of uptake (arrow) that corresponds to the cricoarytenoid muscles located posterior to the thyrocricoid cartilage. Although this site and pattern of uptake are typical for activated vocal cords, CT helps confirm the physiologic nature of the FDG accumulation. Without CT correlation, this focus of uptake may lead to a false-positive finding in patients with malignant processes in this location, particularly in the posttherapy setting.
